FLOODING PROMPTS AWARENESS OF IMMUNIZATION STATUS

Recent flooding in Wright County serves as a good reminder to check your immunization records.    An increase in a disease like tetanus has not been associated with flooding but exposure to flood waters with an injury may increase risk of this disease. Immunizations like tetanus are routinely recommended for adults and children as part of maintaining good health.

People are at risk for tetanus when they are injured and the wound is contaminated by the environment. Flooding is not shown to increase the risk for tetanus, however cleaning up after a flood may increase your risk of getting injured. Anytime you obtain a wound, ask your healthcare provider if you need a tetanus-containing vaccine to protect you from disease.

Adults should receive a booster dose of tetanus, diphtheria-containing vaccine every 10 years. Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) vaccine is routinely recommended as it also protects against whooping cough which causes illness every year in Iowa.

Children need a basic series of four doses of vaccine between 2 and 18 months of age as well as booster doses at 4 to 6 years and 11 to 12 years of age.

“Now is a good time for people in Wright County to make sure you are up to date on your tetanus shots due to the tremendous flooding especially if you have had an injury with an open wound.” states Linda Klehm, Administrator of Wright County Health Department. Linda recommended contacting your local health provider or the Wright County Health Department at 515-532-3461 if you have concerns or questions you can access websites at IDPH http://www.idph.state.ia.us/adper/immunization.asp, or the Wright County Health Department at www.wrightcounty.org and follow the link to public health.
